It's a rare underhill maybe made before the civil war. The handle has been replaced and seems to be made of cherry wood with split in the middle. Underhill edge tools in Auburn, New Hampshire, was a dynamic hand tools company in the 1800s and was operated by the underhill family; in the 1820s, the underhills manufactured ship's tools in their forges on thechester Road and, in 1835, bought the mill in the Auburn Village. For 30 years, the underhills, with the help of friends and family, produced axes, burins, adze and other tools sharpened at the village dam.
